Google, the Sputnik of today?
Thursday, October 4th, 2007
In honor of Sputnik’s 50th Anniversary, Google has snazzied up their logo with a bit of Sputnik goodness. And as is the case with many of Google’s holiday logos, we try to highlight their work when we can. Especially when it fits so nicely with our own daily celebrations.
If you think about there is almost a direct line from Sputnik, the first man-made satellite, and Google, the worlds most popular search engine.
I would say we need to go way back to the black and white days of the cold war. The launch of Sputnik changed the world and swept in the space race between the US and the Soviet Union. In fact both Google and Sputnik, in their own ways, brought about major changes to the way we looked at our world.
The race to the Moon opened our eyes to the reality of our small and fragile planet. While the growth of Google has opened our eyes, and minds, to the vast database of human knowledge across this planet. All free and readily available to anyone. Â
While Sputnik was part of the “Evil Empire“, could it be that it’s Google who really will bring “Do No Evil” to the planet?
