(November 11) Today we're observing . . .  Veterans Day

Veterans Day
An American holiday honoring military veterans. Both a federal  and a state holiday, the day is largely intended to thank living veterans for their service, to acknowledge that their contributions to United States national security are appreciated, and to underscore the fact that all those who served – not only those who died – have sacrificed and done their duty

It is observed on November 11 which is the anniversary of the signing of the Armistice that ended World War I. (Major hostilities of World War I formally ended at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918)

Read the Veterans Day 2007 Presidential Proclamation

Note: When a federal holiday falls on a Sunday, as Veterans Day 2007 does,  federal employees observe the day on the following Monday. So federal employees have tomorrow November 12th off.
