Our Favorite Celeb Dads – Favorite Athlete Dad

Tuesday, June 10th, 2008

From musicians to athletes to actors, join us as we continue our countdown to Father’s Day with the hottest celebrity pops in the business. And we’ve even got a genuine super hero dad!

Favorite Athlete Dad: Tiger Woods
In 2006, the World’s No. 1 golfer Tiger Woods brought home over $100 million in endorsements and tournament winnings. In 2007, he brought home something far more valuable: Daughter Sam Alexis. The baby, born on June 16th, is the first child for the golfing superstar and his model wife Elin Nordegren Woods.

Now for a golfer, June means US Open – which is exactly where Tiger was when he got the call that baby Sam was on her way. In fact, all the excitement might have thrown Tiger off his game – he ‘only’ came in 2nd at that coveted tournament.

Was his runner-up finish a sign that fatherhood has put Tiger off his game? Not at all. In fact, since Sam’s birth, Tiger’s earned seven first-place finishes, including the PGA Championship and the Tour Championship.

But winning streaks aside, Sam’s birth has prompted Tiger to reevaluate his priorities: “[With a baby,] it’s just time management and understanding where your priorities are, and our priorities are Sam. That’s the one priority,” Tiger told the USA Today.

Family has always been paramount for Tiger, who had an especially close relationship with his own father, the late Earl Woods. Tiger says that Sam’s name is a tribute to his dad, who is credited with putting a golf club in Tiger’s hands at the tender age of two.

“My father had always called me Sam since the day I was born,” Tiger explained at press conference shortly after Sam’s birth. “He rarely ever called me Tiger. I would ask him, ‘Why don’t you ever call me Tiger?’ He says, ‘Well, you look more like a Sam.'” Seems like little Sam Alexis did, too!

Countdown to Father's Day 2008 (T-05): Top TV Dads

Tuesday, June 10th, 2008

As we countdown to Father’s Day (T-05 days) – here’s our continuing look at some of TV’s favorite fathers: From the 1950s cardigan-wearing, “Father Knows Best” types to the 21st century guys juggling dysfunctional families and questionable careers.

TV’s Top Dads (in chronological order)

Heathcliff Huxtable (1980’s)
One of TV’s first African American fathers, Heathcliff Huxtable also broke paternal ground in The Cosby Show (1984-1993) for his dual-income earning family. The high-powered couple (Cliff was an OB-GYN, wife Clair a corporate attorney) resonated with American viewers, who were eager to see an image of their own family’s working status – rather than TV land’s persistence in the passé norm of the housewife mom. Together, the joke-cracking Cliff and straight-laced Clair raised their five kids, ranging in age from preschool to high school, in their Brooklyn brownstone.
