Countdown to Father's Day 2008 (T-04): Top TV Dads

Wednesday, June 11th, 2008

As we countdown to Father’s Day (T-04 days) – here’s our continuing look at some of TV’s favorite fathers: From the 1950s cardigan-wearing, “Father Knows Best” types to the 21st century guys juggling dysfunctional families and questionable careers.

TV’s Top Dads (in chronological order)

Steven Keaton (1980’s)
Steven Keaton (played by Michael Gross) was the liberal, loving dad to three in Family Ties (1982-1989). Both Steven and wife Elyse were former flower children trying to reconcile their now suburban lifestyle with a soulful quest to “do good” in the world. Steven found an outlet for his altruism in his career – running the public TV station; but at home, this former hippy was constantly foiled by eldest son Alex “P.” Keaton, a hard-core Reagan Republican.

(June 11) This week we're celebrating . . .  National Flag Week

National Flag Week
By Presidential Proclamation; this week, which includes Flag Day (June 14th), honors and celebrates our flag, our country, and our heritage.

NOW, THEREFORE, I, GEORGE W. BUSH, President of the United States of America, do hereby proclaim June 14, 2008, as Flag Day and the week beginning June 8, 2008, as National Flag Week. I direct the appropriate officials to display the flag on all Federal Government buildings during that week, and I urge all Americans to observe Flag Day and National Flag Week by flying the Stars and Stripes from their homes and other appropriate places. I also call upon the people of the United States to observe with pride and all due ceremony those days from Flag Day through Independence Day, also set aside by the Congress (89 Stat. 211), as a time to honor America, to celebrate our heritage in public gatherings and activities, and to publicly recite the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag of the United States of America.

Father’s Day is right around the corner, which means it’s time to start thinking about how to show your dear ol’ dad just how much he means to you.

Here are fun craft ideas that might just be the solution to your gift-giving woes. While each of these crafts is fairly easy for older kids to master, it’s always wise for mom to offer her supervision and assistance; children under eight will definitely need it.

Our Favorite Celeb Dads – Favorite Super Hero Dad

Wednesday, June 11th, 2008

From musicians to athletes to actors, join us as we continue our countdown to Father’s Day with the hottest celebrity pops in the business. And we’ve even got a genuine super hero dad!

Favorite Super Hero Dad: Tobey Maguire
He’s played Red Pollard in Seabiscuit and Homer Wells in Cider House Rules, but say Tobey Maguire’s name and everyone thinks about just one role: Spiderman. Interesting, then, that in real life, Tobey is much more like Spidey’s alter-ego Peter Parker than the web-slinging super hero.

Tobey is known for being extremely private, unassuming and modest – especially for a guy reportedly earning close to $20 million a picture. Perhaps that’s because it hasn’t always been accolades and action figures for Tobey Maguire.

Born to an unmarried teenage mom, Tobey spent much of his childhood being bounced around the West Coat, from one relative’s house to the next: “I realized at a young age that I was responsible for myself. My feelings of love or security or happiness – they were all in my own hands.”

All that changed in 2003 when Tobey met his now wife Jen Meyer, jewelry designer and daughter of Universal Studios President and CEO Ron Meyer. In November 2006, the couple welcomed their daughter Ruby Sweetheart, and in September 2007, they married at an intimate, private ceremony in Hawaii.

Now, the almost two-year-old Ruby has become the undeniable center of Tobey’s (and Jen’s) world: “It’s a very dramatic change,” he told David Letterman recently. “It’s great. She’s so adorable. She’s just a smiley, little beautiful thing.”
