Did You Know?
Facts, Figures & Folklore
about Martin Luther King &
the Civil Rights Movement

Jan. 07 : 11 Days to MLK Day

Did you know that Dr. King and his wife, Coretta Scott King, traveled to India, the homeland of Mahatma Ghandi, in 1959?

While there, Dr. King studied Ghandi’s principles, known as Satyagraha, and determined that he would use them as his primary instrument of social protest in the United States.

Did you know that Dr. King earned a Nobel Peace Prize in 1964?

The Nobel Peace Prize was awarded to Dr. King for having "contributed the most to the furtherance of peace among men." The prize money — $54,000* — was divided by Dr. King among various civil rights organizations.

*FYI-In 2009 US President Barack Obama was awarded 1.4 million dollars when he won the prize!

Each year on the third Monday of January schools, federal offices, post office and banks across America close as we celebrate the birth, the life and the dream of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

It is a time for the nation to remember the injustices that Dr. King fought. A time to remember his fight for the freedom, equality, and dignity of all races and peoples. A time to remember the message of change through nonviolence.

Join us for our look at the past 60 years of the civil rights movement and our countdown to Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, Monday January 18, 2010.
