About Rosh Hashanah &
the Jewish High Holy Days

Sept 03 : 05 days to Rosh Hashanah*

Did you know that a shofar, the world’s oldest wind instrument, is ritually blown on Rosh Hashanah?

The piercing sound of the shofar*, which is made from a hollowed out ram’s horn, serves as a clarion call to worshippers to repent. It is the one musical instrument that has not changed in over 5,000 years.

(*Come Blow our Horn! Welcome in the High Holy Days by blowing our shofar!)

Rosh Hashanah begins a 10 day period, known as the High Holy Days or Yamim Nora’im, a time of penitence and prayer that ends with Yom Kippur. Jews worldwide are given these 10 days to repent for their sins and ask G-d for forgiveness.

We’ll be presenting a new “Did You Know?” fact each day as we countdown to Rosh Hashanah and the Jewish High Holy Days. Please join us!

*Rosh Hashanah 5771 begins at sundown on Wednesday September 08, 2010.
