About Memorial Day

May 29 : 1 day to Memorial Day

Did you know that the first state to officially recognize the observance of Memorial Day was New York, in 1873?

Over the next decade, May 30th was adopted by other northern states as their official Memorial Day as well. The southern states, however, honored their Civil War casualties on a different date. The nation did not finally unite behind one Memorial Day until after World War I.

Memorial Day is America’s day to remember those who have died serving our nation, and to honor their families. We’ll be presenting a new “Did You Know?” fact each day as we countdown to Memorial Day (05/30/11)! So stop by again tomorrow.
