July 24 : 08 days to Ramadan*

Did you know that health experts estimate food consumption actually increases 50 percent during the month of Ramadan?

Did you know that according to a government-run survey in Tunisia, 59 percent of women and 35 percent of men gained weight during Ramadan, despite fasting for some 14 hours a day?

Observed by more than one billion Muslims around the world, the month of Ramadan is a time for spiritual purification achieved through fasting, self-sacrifice and prayers. We’ll be presenting a new “Did You Know?” fact each day as we countdown to Ramadan!*

*Please Note: According to Fiqh Council of North America (FCNA) the first day of fasting in North America would be Monday, August 1, 2011. Elsewhere depends where you live.

(July 24) Today we’re celebrating . . .  Cousin’s Day

Cousin’s Day
A day for celebrating our cousins! I know I’m showing my age now but what better way to celebrate the day than a little clip of TVs ultimate cousins!

Meet Cathy, who’s lived most everywhere,
From Zanzibar to Barclay Square.
But Patty’s only seen the sights
A girl can see from Brooklyn Heights —
What a crazy pair!

But they’re cousins,
Identical cousins all the way.
One pair of matching bookends,
Different as night and day.

Where Cathy adores a minuet,
The Ballet Russes, and crepe suzette,
Our Patty loves to rock and roll,
A hot dog makes her lose control —
What a wild duet!

Still, they’re cousins,
Identical cousins and you’ll find,
They laugh alike, they walk alike,
At times they even talk alike —
You can lose your mind,
When cousins are two of a kind.
